Roberto's opinion

Diana loves the Azores! Those lonely nine paradise islands in the middle of the Atlantic.

She first wrote about the Portuguese in Central California whilst working as a journalist for the Los Angeles Times. Diana got a Pulitzer for that!

But she was missing something: joy, beauty and love. So she took a chance and visited the islands. Diana was enchanted with its people, its traditions, its cuisine and its views. She got to discover a part of her that was only possible when she left her California.

Diana yearns to go back after her first visit, and she does. This time with her labrador, that likes to eat the local fresh bread.

Whilst she now carries The Tenth Island with her, with much Saudade, a longing so deep that the Portuguese word for it can’t be fully translated.

All Azoreans do carry Saudade with them, including myself, since being born on the third island of that archipelago.

Disclaimer: No islanders were harmed during this review!

PAIRS WELL WITH

A 2019 Silk & Spice Red Blend from Portugal. Silk & Spice is the Portuguese red for every day that really delivers. The grapes selected for Silk & Spice come from the regions Dão, Bairrada, and Lisboa. Innumerable tastings and analyses were carried out to determine the final blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Alicante Bouschet and 30% Baga, creating a wine with delightfully forward fruit and very soft tannins. Goes perfect with Saudade!
